How Patch Collecting Has Been Doing the Rounds For Ages
Summertime is motor bike time in America, with rallies popping up in a number of places all over the country. And if you consider yourself to be a patch collector, then this is the perfect time to make the most of all the different patches available for swap or purchase. During the winter, the biker circuit tends to go a bit quiet so this is the perfect time to start organizing your collection of patches.
Patch collecting is an old hobby even though we typically think of embroidered patches as a relatively new phenomenon. You may be completely surprised to discover that patches have actually been in existence for thousands of years and date back to ancient cultures from Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Some of the earliest patches ever discovered were from ancient Chinese dynasties that most of us have never heard of. These pieces were beautiful works of embroidery specifically designed for identification purposes.
How Patches are Connected to the Military
Historians believe it's quite possible that the idea of embroidered patches was originally developed for military identification. Patches would identify a warrior as to the particular group he belonged to, perhaps his rank, and sometimes even his position. Embroidered patches have become much more sophisticated as have the armies that use them. There's tons of patches used by the modern army which denote different divisions, brigades, special units and the rank of the individual.
Patches have been around for ages now and believe it or not, people have been collecting them for the same length of time. Although hard to find, military patch collections from ancient cultures have been uncovered, giving testimony to the value of these emblems from a personal and collector's standpoint. It's no wonder that so many patch collectors these days like to devote one section to military patches.
Bike Rallies and Patches
Also vitally important to any sizable patch collection is the category of bike rally patches. As already mentioned, the summer months sees all sorts of bike rallies happening all over the states but also in other parts of the world including Europe, Canada and Australia. Motor cycle clubs tend to put the same kind of importance on patches as the military do these days. The patches that motor bike clubs use these days will denote not only rank and position within the club but also the club that the biker belongs to.
There's many bikers who will buy a patch from every rally that they go to. They do so not only to make identification with that rally, but also to collect and swap with other collectors. There's even museums, like the one in Sturgis, SD that include biker patches as part of their display. If a patch collector has a sizable collection then there is bound to be a section of bike rally patches to go with a section of military patches.
You don't need to be a biker to collect patches which is among the best things about it. You will only require a few dollars to get you going and a passion for this pastime. Once you have a couple dozen patches to swap with, you're on your way to building a sizable collection that you can be proud of.
