Patches And An Explanation Of The Plastic Backing On Them
You have probably come across blog posts or descriptions about patches which mentions the fact that particular patches have a plastic backing. Sometimes the writer refers to that plastic backing as heat-activated glue that allows you to attach the piece by simply using a hot iron. Unfortunately, that's not necessarily true. I will actually try to clear up a few of these misconceptions. The fact that not all patches contain heat activated glue just because they have a plastic backing is the reason why this is necessary.
Plastic backing and heat sealed backing are two different things according to patchology.org which is a website that is devoted to providing explanations of everything to do with patches. When it comes to plastic backing, it is exactly what it says it is a thin layer of plastic which is applied to the back of a patch in order to make it stronger and last longer. In order for this plastic to be used as an adhesive it would have to be heated up to temperatures that could very well do harm to the patch itself. For this reason plastic backed patches are typically sewn in place with needle and thread.
It is actually heat sealed backing that people are talking about when they mention heat activated glue. This backing material may be applied directly to the patch or it may be applied over a layer of plastic. It is possible to adhere patches with heat sealed backing to almost any fabric. There is not much chance of your patch being damaged when you are applying it because you do not need to use very high temperatures.
With that cleared up, I'll address how heat sealed backing actually works in a future post. You will be able to find out more by staying tuned.
All bikers recognize how important it is to have the proper riding clothing, therefore adding biker vests to augment your existing clothes is a must. Only when you look your best will you really feel more comfortable riding.

Biker Club etiquette?
My 60+ year old Uncle recently bought a Harley Davidson motorcycle. It's something that he always wanted. He also got the proper riding gear, leathers etc. He actually is now friends with others who ride and some are part of "christian" bike clubs.
None the less my Uncle put his name on his riding vest with a patch. It was lets say black and white. He was approached by the "president" of this 'Christian" club and said that he "needed approval" to use their colors!??
Ok I am gonna say this. Really does it matter? What is the deal? I don't get it.
