What list of fonts would you say a professional graphic designer should have?
I'm looking for a list of classic usable fonts that a good graphic designer would have in their library.
If you can provide reasoning for your choices and what the font would be most appropriate for, then even better.
Answer:
It's really a matter of personal taste. If you purchase the Adobe Creative Suite it comes with a large library of opentype fonts that are a good start for any graphic designer. However, my personal favorites that aren't included are as follows:
Avenir: A really versatile, yet simple, upscale looking font. Good for both body copy and headlines.
Interstate: This is my favorite font. Comes in a huge variety of weights and widths, always cool looking, always legible. I used to lay out an entire magazine using pretty much just Interstate, and it always looked fresh and exciting.
Dear John: There are several versions of this font, many are free. If you're looking for a cool handwriting font that isn't your typical, boring Mistral or Brush Script, this is the way to go.
Optima: I'm not sure if Optima comes with Adobe nowadays or not, but it's a great all-around font. Very classic and usable across the board. Perfect if you want something more formal than a typical sans-serif, but not looking for the formality of say Garamond or Baskerville. It's a perfect "in-between" font.
Trajan: Trajan is always great if you're looking for something upscale. I use it often and it never gets old. The only drawback is that it doesn't exist (as far as I know) in upper and lower case, your only options are small caps and all caps. Nonetheless, it's great for headlines and small bulleted lists.
Hope this helps!
