Big Fun At Small Parties: Finding The Best Birthday Party Clown
Working as a birthday party clown requires a special je ne sais quoi. Entertaining big at small events is a challenge that is frequently underestimated. Some parents think that if there are fewer kids, entertaining them must be easier. Some clowns measure their success by the size of the crowds.
“Horse feathers!”
In the words of Groucho Marx, “Horse feathers!” There's no audience easier to please than 200 children in a school gym. The buildup of laughter among a crowd of children is hilarious and self-reinforcing. The room has plenty of space for movement, and there are no distractions.
A birthday party clown works harder. Motivating a few children to roll about on the floor convulsed with laughter takes more strategy. Space may be limited, distractions may abound, and the children may be self-conscious in a small group.
Yet serious clowns don’t run away from the challenge. Silly Billy, New York City’s birthday party clown of choice, and The Great Zuchini, Washington, D.C.’s star performer for preschoolers, are two top-of-the-line artists who appear in living rooms everywhere.
Book 'im, Danno
There's a clown near you who's perfect for your birthday party. The key to landing the best entertainer is to book early. Nail down the performer, so to speak, before finalizing the hall booking and sending out invitations. A common question that parents ask is, “How far ahead do I need to book?” Three months in advance is prudent. Should you snag an amazing kids' comedian for the upcoming Saturday, luck is with you.
Vet the candidates with a telephone call. Most independent clowns are available to speak with you. Talking with the entertainers gives you insights that email can't deliver.
What kids love
While clowns often appear at grownup events, most birthday parties are for kids. Superior interaction with children is a prime requirement for clowns. Recommendations from friends and colleagues help you to find those who know what children love.
Adults are laughing
What’s screamingly funny to a child is not usually hilarious to a grownup. If there are adults in the audience, versatile professionals keep them laughing, too. Comments on the internet from previous clients show whose fun kids' parties appeal to the whole family.
Create cherished memories
The best birthday party clowns create long-cherished memories for children. It's a marvelous treat for a child to be the centre of a brilliant party. When a kid says to his mom, “That was the best birthday ever!” everyone’s happiness is big.
The whole enchilada
The ideal party clown is also reliable, well-prepared and flexible. Good communication is an important safeguard for everyone. When these and the above qualities are in place, you’re guaranteed a memorable experience.

Frequently Asked Questions...
30th Birthday Themes?
I'm having a 30th Birthday party in July. I was going to have everyone come dressed as a famous rock star but people are divided as far as dressing up. I have a short temper and know that if people show up not in costume I will flip.
So my invitation are going out in about 2 weeks and I'm going to change that idea to a theme. I like the whole Hawaiian theme but it's been done.
What else can I do in the dead of summer? (it will be inside a hall on a saturday night)
Thanks!
Answer:
When I turned 30, I had a "Candy from my Childhood" party. I ordered candy online and got some from stores. I had those wax pop bottles, candy necklaces and lipsticks and of course, Pixy Sticks. Everybody loved it and we were high on sugar before we even got started on the alcohol! You could also encourage people to dress in '80s gear too. It's not too hard to find leggings, leg warmers and jelly shoes these days!
