Around the close of the 1800s, graphic designers began paying closer attention to the use of pattern, design and shape in their works. Aubrey Beardsley's illustrations were made popular by Oscar Wilde, an Irish writer and playwright who was one of the most controversial figures of the time. Wilde was a passionate aesthete who held that art should be created for the joy of creation and not dependent on any moral or ethical criteria; and he commissioned Beardsley to create many drawings for his written works. Wilde chose this important figure in the history of Art Nouveau style to create imagery for a story of his which was considered 'perverse' and 'exotic'. Using elegant sweeping lines and patterns, clever distortions and sinister eroticism, the young illustrator created a visual compliment to the tale.
The interplay between black and white characterizes this dramatic work. Wilde applied large borders of black to provide variance with dainty patterns frolicking on a surface of white. His page was commonly unbalanced and the artistic movement was displayed with sweeping, continuous and undulating curves. Human characters in these drawings were generally created with deceptively simple outlines in contrast to the complexities of their environment and the objects that they interact with on paper. This interactions between complicated details and simple, clean lines create much of the strength in his art.
At the end of the 19th century imports from Japan were an inspiration for many designers as well as a revitalized study of medieval and early Renaissance art and decoration. The artist's pieces were often copied in Europe and America and he gained notoriety due to illustrations having turned up in a series of renowned materials for circulation. By the end of the 1800's, such poster art had gradually changed from a commercial advertising form into a diverse art form all its own.
